Ultralight C or Classic 1K? Which chip your hotel locks need
Start with your installed system and current credential specification. A brand name, a similar-looking card or an encoder change alone does not tell you which replacement to order.
Start with a working card’s specification
Ask your authorized lock service provider for the approved credential specification or current card SKU. Record the lock reader, software and encoder details, then confirm the chip version, capacity and any factory preparation required. Use those requirements to request a quote and test samples before a bulk order.
What a purchasing specification needs
Record whether the installed reader uses magnetic stripe or a contactless credential. Some properties have mixed or retrofitted readers, so collect details by area rather than assuming all doors use the same card.
For contactless cards, the chip family is only one part of the order. The exact version, capacity, credential application and preparation requirements must fit the hotel’s issuing system. Matching a frequency or a product name is not a compatibility test.
Specify the finished card as well: material, thickness, dimensions, printing and any metallic finish. A change from PVC to paper or wood needs its own sample check for handling, encoding and reading performance.
Magnetic stripe or RFID? A quick self-check before you ask for a quote
A visible magnetic stripe is a useful clue, but a hotel key card can carry both a stripe and an RFID chip, and the absence of a stripe does not by itself prove that a chip is present. Note whether the property swipes, inserts or taps the card at the door, and look for a card part number or supplier specification. The card body alone, whether PVC, paper or wood, does not identify the credential inside.
RFID chips operate in one of three frequency bands. Hotel locks overwhelmingly use HF at 13.56 MHz, which balances memory, security, read range and cost, and the MIFARE families listed further down all sit in this band. LF at 125 kHz appears mainly in older systems. UHF offers a longer read range but is rarely used for guest-room doors; if you find a UHF card in a hotel setting, check with your lock vendor before ordering, because it is unusual.

Identifying the band narrows the search. It does not identify the chip version, capacity or credential preparation that your issuing system requires.
Reading the antenna under a bright light
Hold the card up to a bright light and look for the antenna pattern inside the plastic. Treat this as a fast first read, not a final answer:
- A large round copper coil usually indicates LF.
- A large rectangular copper coil usually indicates standard HF.
- A finer rectangular etched aluminium pattern, especially in a thin card around 0.5 mm thick or a paper-based card, also usually indicates HF.
- A long, narrow aluminium strip usually indicates UHF, which is uncommon for hotel doors.
Opaque, printed or metallic card bodies can hide the antenna. If nothing is visible, move on to a scan or ask the service provider for the specification.
What an NFC phone can and cannot read
NFC phones communicate at 13.56 MHz, so a phone with a compatible tag-reading app may report the chip family or IC type of a supported HF card. Record the result from an authorized test card and compare it with the current card part number or supplier specification.
A phone cannot read a 125 kHz LF card, a UHF card or a magnetic stripe, and some HF cards are not detected because of phone and app support, card construction or the condition of the card. A failed scan is therefore inconclusive: it does not establish the frequency band, prove that a card is faulty or explain why a card stopped working.
A chip identification result, from a phone or any other reader, does not confirm credential preparation or prove that your hotel can issue the card. Confirm the specification with the service provider and test agreed samples in the property’s normal workflow.
Three ways to collect identification evidence

An NFC smartphone and a chip-reading app
Quick and widely available, but limited to supported HF chips. Record the reported chip family and treat it as a clue rather than an approval.

A dedicated RFID reader
A reader and its software can identify cards within the frequencies and protocols they support. Confirm the reader specification before interpreting a scan result, and compare several authorized test cards. Matching chip names or UID formats are useful evidence, but they do not establish that a replacement meets your issuing system’s requirements.

Samples sent to an RFID specialist
A specialist can investigate an unidentified card when its specification is unavailable. Agree what the identification service covers and how samples are handled. The result still has to be checked against the installed system: have an authorized operator enroll and encode a proposed replacement, then test the intended doors and readers before approving a bulk order.

Keep the complete chip name on the quote
MIFARE Ultralight EV1, Ultralight C and Ultralight AES are distinct NXP products. Do not shorten the specification to “Ultralight” or agree a substitution solely because the names look similar.
The current lock manufacturer’s credential catalogue is a useful reference, but it does not automatically describe older hardware or a particular hotel’s configuration. Ask the service provider which exact credential is approved for your installation.
For an order, confirm both the chip specification and the finished credential preparation. Those are separate from the artwork proof and the hotel’s on-site issuing process.
Re-check the specification after a system change
If readers, software, encoders or credential settings have changed since the last purchase, ask the authorized service provider whether the old card specification still applies. An upgrade date or encoder replacement alone does not establish the new chip.
Saflok, SALTO, VingCard and Onity have different platforms and credential requirements. Even within one brand, a property’s reader generation and configured issuing system matter. Keep the current specification with your purchasing records instead of relying on a generic compatibility chart.
Separate guest and staff requirements where they differ. If a property uses multiple reader configurations, identify the quantity and sample acceptance checks for each before combining the order.

Five steps from identification to a purchase request

Collect the reader and issuing system details
Record the lock or reader model, any retrofit, the software name and version, and encoder model. A photo of a visible model label can help; avoid including guest information.

Find the current card SKU or approved specification
Check the latest accepted order or ask your authorized lock service provider for the exact chip version, capacity and credential preparation requirements. Do not send passwords, encryption keys or access data.

Use scans and photos as supporting clues
A compatible phone or reader may help identify a chip family, but it does not verify every protected setting or approve a replacement credential. A failed phone scan is not proof that a card is faulty. Have the specification confirmed by the service provider.

Request a quote and a sample plan
Share the non-sensitive specification, quantity, card material, artwork status and delivery destination. If you are unsure of a field, say so. Confirm sample type, any preparation, fees and timing before dispatch.

Approve samples in the hotel’s normal workflow
Have an authorized operator encode and test the agreed samples on the relevant doors and shared access points. Review print and material separately, record the accepted specification, and agree bulk-order acceptance requirements.

Chip selection and ordering questions
How do I know if my hotel uses magstripe or RFID cards?
Look at the card and how the property uses it: swiping or inserting points to a magnetic stripe, tapping to a contactless chip. A visible stripe can coexist with an RFID chip, and no visible stripe is not proof of a chip. Confirm the current card specification with your installer if the format is unclear.
Which RFID frequency do most hotel locks use?
HF at 13.56 MHz is the dominant band across major lock brands, and the MIFARE Classic, Ultralight, Plus and DESFire families all operate there. LF at 125 kHz appears mainly in older systems and UHF is rare for guest-room doors. The band alone does not identify the chip version or preparation your system needs.
Can an NFC phone identify the card I need to order?
A supported phone or reader may give useful chip-family information for an HF card at 13.56 MHz. It cannot read 125 kHz LF cards or magnetic stripes, and a failed scan is inconclusive. It also does not confirm all protected configuration, factory preparation or approval for the hotel’s issuing system. Use it alongside the current card SKU and the service provider’s specification.
Does a new encoder mean we need Ultralight C?
No. An encoder change alone does not identify a required chip. Ask your authorized service provider which credential specification applies to the installed reader, software and configuration.
Are Ultralight EV1, C and AES interchangeable?
They are distinct products. Do not substitute one for another without confirmation for the installed system. Keep the full chip name and any credential preparation requirements on the quote and sample approval.
Do cards with the same chip work across all lock brands or suppliers?
The chip alone is not enough. A replacement must meet the installed system’s credential specification, including the issuing platform, credential application, any required preparation and the reader configuration. Confirm the exact requirements and approve samples on your encoder and required readers before committing to the order.
Why did our reordered key cards stop working?
A failed reorder can involve the card specification, credential preparation, encoding setup or the installed locks. A security update or encoder replacement alone does not establish which chip is needed. Can I request a quote before I know the chip?
Yes. Share the lock or reader model, software or encoder details and current card SKU if known, together with quantity and destination. Mark unknown fields as not sure. Compatibility and commercial terms still need confirmation before an order.
Will a printed sample also prove compatibility?
Only if it uses the agreed credential and is tested in the hotel’s authorized issuing and access workflow. An artwork proof or a sample made only to show printing and material does not prove that it will work with your locks.
