The four things that set your price
1. Chip
The chip is usually the biggest single cost inside an RFID card. Ultralight® EV1 sits at the economical end, Classic® 1K just above it, and DESFire® EV2/EV3 several times higher — which is why matching the chip to what your locks actually read matters more than any discount. Magstripe cards skip the chip entirely, which is why they stay so cheap.
2. Material
Standard PVC is the baseline. Waterproof paper adds a little; bamboo and real wood add more (veneer, pressing and finishing are genuinely slower work). Degradable PVC carries a modest premium over standard PVC for a documented end-of-life story. Details on each: card materials compared.
3. Finish
Full-color offset printing is included in our base prices. Foil stamping, spot UV, embossing and soft-touch lamination add $0.02–$0.06 per card per process. Most properties put premium finishes on suite and VIP cards only — same doors, two price points.
4. Volume
Press setup is a fixed cost, so unit prices step down meaningfully at roughly 1,000 / 5,000 / 10,000 pieces. Ordering a year of cards at once almost always beats quarterly top-ups — and we archive your spec so reorders take one email.

How much do hotel key cards cost in 2026?
At factory-direct pricing: magstripe cards run roughly $0.03–$0.10 per card, standard RFID cards (MIFARE Classic 1K or Ultralight EV1 compatible) about $0.09–$0.30, waterproof paper $0.12–$0.35, bamboo $0.30–$0.60, real wood $0.40–$0.85, and DESFire-based cards $0.45–$1.10. Chip type, material, finish and order volume set the exact figure — quotes through resellers typically add 30–100% on top of factory prices.
Why do quotes for the "same" card vary so much between suppliers?
Four legitimate reasons: chip source (original NXP vs compatible chips), material grade and thickness, finish (foil and spot UV add per-card cost), and where the supplier sits in the chain — every trading layer adds margin. When comparing quotes, fix the spec first: chip, material, thickness, finish, quantity, and whether print proofs and testing are included.
How many key cards does a hotel need per year?
A practical rule of thumb is 3–5 cards per room per year for city hotels where cards are returned, and 6–10 for resorts and properties where guests keep cards. A 200-room city hotel typically orders 1,000–2,000 cards per cycle; ordering a year of stock at once usually lands a better volume tier than quarterly top-ups.
What costs extra beyond the per-card price?
Express shipping (typically $40–$150 per shipment by courier, by weight), and optional finishes like foil stamping, spot UV or printed sleeves ($0.02–$0.08 per unit each). Artwork setup, print proofs, encoding-readiness and unprinted test samples are free at Cardotel; some suppliers bill them separately, so check line items when comparing.
How can we lower key card cost without hurting quality?
Three levers work reliably: order annual volume at once instead of quarterly (unit price steps down at 1k/5k/10k), match the chip to what your locks actually need (a DESFire card in a Classic-1K lock estate is wasted budget), and simplify finishes on standard-issue cards while reserving foil or wood for suites and VIP tiers.
