Polycarbonate (PC) — technical data
- Card body
- Card-grade polycarbonate — the substrate family used in European and US identity documents
- Sheet grades
- White core 100–400 μm (matte Rz 5–12 μm); clear grades 50–100 μm (matte Rz 4–10 μm)
- Construction
- All-PC layers fuse in the hot press into one monolithic body — no adhesive interfaces to attack or delaminate
- Personalisation
- Laser engraving inside the card body: permanent monochrome marking that cannot be scratched off or altered
- Durability
- High gloss, high impact and scratch resistance, heat stability and flame-retardant behaviour — a 5–10 year credential
- Optics
- Highest transparency and surface gloss of any card substrate — clear windows and lens effects are possible
- Chip compatibility
- All 13.56 MHz chips including DESFire-class secure chips; dual-interface builds on request
- Sheet format
- Substrate webs 200–1300 mm, laminated to CR80 card format
Inside a polycarbonate card
PC is the security build: because every layer is the same polymer, heat and pressure fuse the stack into a single solid block. There is no adhesive seam to split, and personalisation is burned by laser inside the body, not printed on top. Any attempt to open or alter the card leaves permanent visible damage — the reason passports and national ID cards specify it.
≈ 760 μm finished — one fused block, no layers to separate
- Clear PC layer · 50–100 μm Fuses into the body; carries laser-engraved personalisation depth
- White PC core · 100–400 μm Offset brand graphics before fusing
- RFID inlay Secure chip + antenna, locked inside the monolith
- White PC core · 100–400 μm Back graphics
- Clear PC layer · 50–100 μm Sealed, glass-smooth back face
When polycarbonate is the right call
- Security matters more than card cost: casinos, gaming floors and high-value member programs get a tamper-evident credential.
- You issue once and expect years: PC outlives PVC several times over, so a $-per-year view often favours it.
- You want laser personalisation: member names and numbers engraved inside the card read premium and never wear off.
Polycarbonate card questions
What makes a polycarbonate card “tamper-evident”?
The card is one fused block of the same polymer — there are no adhesive layers to peel apart and reseal. Delaminating it destroys it visibly, and laser-engraved personalisation sits inside the body where it cannot be scraped off and re-printed. This is the construction national ID programs rely on.
Is PC worth the premium for a hotel or club?
Priced per card, PC is the most expensive plastic we run. Priced per year of service, it is often the cheapest: a PC member card lasts 5–10 years where PVC is retired in 2–5. For casinos, member clubs and staff credentials with access rights, the maths usually favours PC.
How does laser engraving differ from printing?
A laser carbonises microscopic points inside the clear layer, producing permanent monochrome text and photos with no ink. It cannot smear, fade or be altered without visible damage. Brand colour still comes from offset-printed core layers underneath — the two techniques combine on one card.
Do PC cards work with standard hotel locks?
Yes. The chips are the same 13.56 MHz families used in every other card we make, in the same CR80 format. PC is routinely paired with DESFire-class secure chips for properties that want the card body and the chip security to match.
