O PVC degradável incorpora aditivos que permitem ao material degradar-se após a eliminação em condições de aterro biologicamente ativas, verificado em testes ASTM D3826 e D5208. Inside a degradable PVC card

The build is deliberately identical to a standard PVC card — same five-layer laminate, same inlay bonding, same encoders. The only change is inside the resin: an organic additive that lets landfill microbes colonise and break down the polymer chain after disposal.

When degradable PVC is the right call

  • You want an eco upgrade with zero workflow change: same encoders, same printers, same guest experience, same price ballpark.
  • Heat stability matters: it keeps PVC’s 80–86 °C Vicat point, where compostable PLA sheet (50–60 °C) risks warping in hot mail and parked cars.
  • Your brand reports ESG: an ASTM D5511 test trail gives sustainability teams a citable line item.

Degradable PVC questions

Does degradable PVC look or feel different from standard PVC?

No. The degradation accelerant changes nothing a guest, encoder or printer can detect — whiteness, stiffness, print response and heat stability all match standard card PVC. That is the point: an eco swap that requires no retraining and no new hardware.

How fast does it actually degrade?

Under ASTM D5511 test conditions (anaerobic, microbe-rich — simulating an active landfill) the material shows substantially accelerated biodegradation versus standard PVC, which persists indefinitely. Real-world rate depends on landfill activity, so we cite the test method rather than promising a fixed number of years.

Why not just use compostable PLA or PHA cards?

Bio-based PLA/PHA card sheet composts cleanly to CO₂ and water, but it softens at 50–60 °C — a card mailed in summer or left on a dashboard can warp before first use — and it costs more. Degradable PVC keeps PVC’s 80–86 °C stability and price while fixing the end-of-life story.

Will cards start breaking down in storage or in guest use?

No. Degradation needs sustained contact with the microbe-rich, oxygen-poor environment of a landfill. In a drawer, wallet or encoder the card behaves exactly like standard PVC for years.
